Arsi University College of Health Sciences (in partnership with a German university and funded by GIZ) is looking to hire a pair of university hospitals in the Oromia region to run a specific medical research study on sepsis.

Non-Interventional Sepsis Research Study in the Oromia Region, Ethiopia

Within the framework of a research project funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) dias via the German hospital partnerships, quotations are invited from eligible university-affiliated hospitals in the Oromia Region for the implementation of a non-interventional sepsis research study.

The project aims to strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) practices and to conduct the recruitment and analysis of 96 sepsis patients from vulnerable populations, including children and individuals living with HIV.

In addition to routine clinical diagnostics, molecular pathogen diagnostics using Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology will be applied.

The scope of services includes, but is not limited to:

• Implementation of IPC and AMR training activities (workshops for caregivers).
• Recruitment, documentation, and clinical data collection of eligible sepsis patients.
• Laboratory analyses in accordance with the study protocol, including Nanopore-based sequencing.
• Full documentation and transfer of all study data and results to the project sponsor.

Eligible applicants must demonstrate:

• Established inpatient clinical services, including paediatric care and ICU/NICU.
• A functional clinical laboratory with experience in blood culture diagnostics.
• Existing infrastructure relevant for molecular diagnostics and Oxford Nanopore sequencing (e.g. PCR cycler, MinION device, adequate computing and data storage capacity).
• A qualified, interdisciplinary study team with good English language proficiency.

Applications must be submitted as a joint application consisting of one lead center and one designated sub-center. Separate applications from sub-centers alone will not be considered. The lead center will assume responsibility for overall coordination, contractual arrangements, and financial management.

Available project funds are limited. Applicants are required to submit a binding lump-sum quotation covering all costs, including but not limited to ethics approvals, taxes, overheads, and transport costs.

All data and results generated within the project must be fully and promptly transferred to the project sponsor
